    Topological properties of high-voltage electrical transmission networks



    Abstract

    The topological properties of high-voltage electrical power transmission networks in several UE countries (the Italian 380 kV, the French 400 kV and the Spanish 400 kV networks) have been studied from available data. An assessment of the vulnerability of the networks has been given by measuring the level of damage introduced by a controlled removal of links. Topological studies could be useful to make vulnerability assessment and to design specific action to reduce topological weaknesses.

    A new approach for power system online DSA using distributed processing and fuzzy
    logic



    Abstract

    In this paper, a new approach for power system online dynamic security assessment, as well as a tool for calculating the proposed fuzzy dynamic security index is presented. This proposal is based on a three-stage fuzzy inference system, which composes the fuzzy dynamic security index making use of seven performance indexes herein defined. The calculation of the performance indexes is based on the results obtained through dynamic simulations of the system behaviour after each one of the credible contingencies in a given operation state. With the aim of reducing the calculation time a novel distributed processing of the dynamic simulations is also developed. High voltage systems are used to illustrate the ideas presented in the paper

    Sensitivity improvement of time overcurrent relays



    Abstract

    In this paper, we recommend a new adaptive function for time overcurrent relays. The purpose of the adaptation process is to improve the sensitivity of time overcurrent relays, which then operate with a dynamic pickup setting such as a load current. The results obtained from time overcurrent adaptive relays are collated, and the results from analysis of negative sequence relays and conventional time overcurrent relays are also presented. In this article, we describe the control logic structure of an adaptive pickup current and its performance under different operating states

    Coupling capacitor voltage transformer: A model for electromagnetic transient studies



    Abstract

    In this work, an accurate coupling capacitor voltage transformer (CCVT) model for electromagnetic transient studies is presented. The model takes into account linear and nonlinear elements. A support routine was developed to compute the linear 230 kV CCVT parameters (resistances, inductances and capacitances) from frequency response data. The magnetic core and surge arrester nonlinear characteristics were estimated from laboratory measurements as well. The model is used in connection with the electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) to predict the CCVT performance when it is submitted to transient overvoltages, as are the cases of voltages due to the ferroresonance phenomenon and circuit breaker switching. The difference between simulated and measured results is fairly small. Simulations had shown that transient overvoltages produced inside the CCVT, when a short circuit is cleared at the CCVT secondary side, are effectively damped out by the ferroresonance suppression circuit and the protection circuit

    Simulation of the impact of wind power on the transient fault behavior of the Nordic power system



    Abstract

    In this paper the effect of wind power on the transient fault behavior of the Nordic power system is investigated. The Nordic power system is the interconnected power system of the countries Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. For the purpose of these investigations the wind turbines installed and connected in eastern Denmark are taken as study case. The current and future wind power situation in eastern Denmark is modeled and short circuit faults in the system simulated. The simulations yield information on (i) how the faults impact on the wind turbines and (ii) how the response of the wind turbines influences the post-fault behavior of the Nordic power system.

    It is concluded that an increasing level of wind power penetration leads to stronger system oscillations in case of fixed speed wind turbines. It is found that fixed speed wind turbines that merely ride through transient faults have negative impacts on the dynamic response of the system. These negative impacts can be mitigated though, if sophisticated wind turbine control is applied
