    Knowledge-based neural network for line flow Contingency selection and ranking
    Abstract: The Line flow Contingency
    Selection and Ranking (CS & R) is
    performed to rank the critical
    contingencies. An Artificial Neural
    Network based method for MW security
    assessment corresponding to line outage
    events have been reported by various
    authors in the literature. One way to
    provide an understanding of the
    behaviour of Neural Networks is to
    extract rules that can be provided to the
    user. The domain knowledge (fuzzy rules
    extracted from Multi-layer Perceptron
    model trained by Back Propagation
    algorithm) is integrated with a Neural
    Network for fast and accurate CS & R in
    an IEEE 14-bus system, for unknown
    load patterns and are found to be
    suitable for on-line applications at
    Energy Management Centers. The
    system user is provided with the
    capability to determine the set of
    conditions under which a line-outage is
    critical, and if critical, then how severe
    it is, thereby providing some degree of
    transparency of the ANN solution.

    Designing Modern Electrical Systems With Transformers That Inherently Reduce Harmonic Distortion

    ABSTRACT
    Generally, the electrical community has come to accept the fact that today's office facilities have
    an abundance of electronic equipment that produce harmonics. Based on the results of hundreds
    of electrical system surveys we have determined that the predominant harmonics are triplens;
    however, a high degree of 5th and 7th harmonics are also present and need to be treated for a
    more comprehensive solution. These harmonic rich environments are known to cause serious
    operational problems for users as well as building maintenance personnel. Until recently, no costeffective
    methods have been proposed that can universally deal with 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics
    during the design and specification stage of three phase four wire electrical distribution systems.
    By integrating phase shifting into an extremely low zero phase sequence impedance transformer
    with single or multiple outputs, substantial reduction of triplen, 5th and 7th harmonics can be
    achieved. The net result is that the electrical distribution system predictably becomes
    electromagnetically compatible with the electronic loads (e.g. personal computers) it has to
    supply.

    Fast Transients in the Operation of an Induction Motor with Vacuum Switches.


    Abstract - Generally in industrial plants, overvoltages
    of impulse type are not considered, hence the impulse test
    of the equipment is not specified. This paper shows one of
    these cases, but high and fast voltage transients can arise
    in a 2.3 kV system, when the starting autotransformer of a
    1750HP motor is operated through a vacuum switch, and
    can explain the power failure of autotransformer.
    A model was built in the ATP for simulating switching
    operations that are not easy to be tested in the real system
    or difficult to record such as multiple re-ignitions of the
    arc in the circuit breaker. MODELS was used to build the
    control logic that simulates the multiple re-ignitions of
    the arc.

    Abstract
    The software design of power system computation often requires modifications due to modernization of existing
    network and automation of the power system operation. ******-oriented design has gained widespread importance
    and acceptance in software development due to its advantages over other methodologies. An ******-oriented design
    for power system analysis is proposed in this paper with greater concentration on power system equivalents
    and distribution system. The important contribution of this paper is the development of software ******s for various
    transmission and distribution system components, which can be reused in most of the power system analysis
    programs.

    An ATP Simulation of Shunt Capacitor Switching in an Electrical Distribution System


    Abstract - The quality of electric power has been a constant
    topic of study, mainly because inherent problems to it can
    lead to great economic losses, especially in industrial
    processes. Among the various factors that affect power
    quality, those related to transients originating from
    capacitor bank switching in the primary distribution systems
    must be highlighted. In this work, the characteristics of
    transients resulting from the switching of utility capacitor
    banks are analyzed, as well as factors that influence their
    intensities. The conditions under which these effects are
    mitigated can then be investigated. A circuit that represents
    a real distribution system, 13.8 kV, from CPFL (Cia Paulista
    de Força e Luz – a Brazilian utility) was simulated through
    the software ATP (Alternative Transients Program) for
    purposes of this study. Finally, a comparison with real-life
    data recorded at the distribution system was performed in
    order to validate the present simulation.

    CURRENT-LIMITING FUSES IMPROVE POWER QUALITY


    INTRODUCTION
    Voltage sags (sometimes called voltage dips) in power networks due to power system shortcircuit
    faults can cause serious problems for computer systems, adjustable-speed drives, and
    other industrial and domestic systems [1,2]. The cost of downtime and incorrect operation of
    equipment is becoming increasingly important. A recent study showed that major industrial users
    in South Africa suffer annual losses of more than $200 million due to voltage sags [3].
    The effect of a voltage sag is dependent upon its magnitude and duration. A curve published by
    the Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC, formerly known as CBEMA), is often used
    as a yardstick for the assessment of voltage sags. This curve, shown in Fig.1, defines overvoltage
    and undervoltage limits as a function of time. The region in between these two limits is a region
    of acceptable power quality. Although the ITIC (CBEMA) curve is strictly applicable only to
    120V single-phase equipment subject to very specific types of voltage waves, it is nevertheless a
    useful general guide for other power systems.
    For a bolted fault to ground the faulted bus voltage will drop to zero. Fig.1 shows that for this
    case the duration of the fault must be less than 20ms to fall within the ITIC (CBEMA) limits. It
    follows that the operating speed of protection systems plays a key role in mitigating the effects
    of voltage sags and the improving of power quality [2,3,4]. The high-speed clearance provided
    by current-limiting fuses, which have no moving parts, can make a significant contribution to the
    improvement of power quality.

    Measured Faults during Lightning Storms

    Abstract—Lightning storms may only last some hours, but the
    number of faults during these storms can represent a considerable
    share of the annual disturbances. In this paper, six identified
    lightning storms were the main interest. In general, single-phase
    earth faults are the most typical fault type. However, in the
    lightning storms we researched, short circuits represented the
    majority of faults. The majority of faults, both during lightning
    storms and in normal conditions, are cleared by high-speed
    autoreclosure. In addition, it was observed that during lightning
    storms coincident faults and fault types that develop into another
    fault type before the opening of the circuit breaker occurred
    repeatedly. When observing the influence of overvoltage
    protection type on faults, the results encourage the use of surge
    arresters.
