sectionalizer
A device similar to a reclosure that acts as a bypass switch for faulty sections of a transmission or distribution network. Sectionalizers remain open, not allowing energy to pass until a line goes dead, perhaps due to the tripping of a breaker or reclosure. When the primary circuit is broken, the sectionalizer switches energy flow to another circuit, allowing energy to flow on a parallel path around the section with the fault. The use of sectionalizers insures that power can continue to flow to critical points on a grid even when downed lines or other serious faults interrupt the primary transmission paths to those points
The sectionalizers are constructed three-phase and single-phase, within the single-phase, at present time, appear those that are adaptable in the interchangeable cutouts, the equipment has its better application in single-phase branches.
The sectionalizers do not have capacity to interrupt fault currents. These equipment counts the recloser operations during established conditions of fault. After of a selected number of openings of the recloser associate and when this last one is open, the sectionalizer opens and isolates the fault section in the line. This operation allows the recloser to close and to reestablish the service in the free zones of fault. If the fault is temporary, the sectionalizer operation mechanism must automatically recover after a pre- established time.
